The university was closed indefinitely on Tuesday, after the students staged demonstrations from last week.

This happened after alleged brutality from the police, where many students were left nursing injuries.

Speaking on Tuesday, Orengo said the students have been denied their academic freedom, and the matter has quickly turned political.

“We want to remind the police that they are there to protect Kenyans under their Bill or Rights; right to demonstrate and picket, and to assemble,” he said.

He added: “It is surprising that even part of the university, where we saw police brutality in a primitive form, and instead of the authority dealing with such issue, they have decided to send students home and close the university, the students have suffered twice; suffering from police brutality and also not being able to continue with their studies,”

He further warned the Vice Chancellor, saying he was wrong to shut down the institution.

“The Vice Chancellor of Nairobi should be very careful because there is something which the universities have been fighting for long, called academic freedom, which is being violated at the university,”
