The ambitions of many Kibera slum dwellers to start businesses are set to receive a major boost as Shining Hope for Communities (Shofco) chief executive Kennedy Odede speaks of what he is planning for the area.
A community based organisation which as launched in 2013 is set to change the fortunes of area residents.
According to Mr Odede, he wants to see a Kibera resident who is empowered in order overcome the challenges they face.
He said his desire to change lives is what made him look for donors who could help give residents credit without placing collateral, which he said many residents do not have.
The Shofco urban networks offers loans without collateral to residents, mainly women.
Since its launch three years ago, the organisation has 3,000 members who have been divided into 300 groups.
There are plans to recruit more members.
"Our people must be empowered. They shouldn't just be given tokens," said Mr Odede.
"This is not political. It's pure love for the people. Everyone has to live dignified life,"he added.
He said the former British High Commissioner to Kenya Dr Christian Turner was very supportive to the organisation as he even took part in its launch.
