The Shining Hope of Kibera Communities (Shofco) has started an empowerment project that is targeting school going girls in the slum.
The organisation has been of great importance to students and the girl child in the slums since it organises forums as a platform for them to channel their private questions and be helped in getting the answers.
According to Shofco official Denis Otieno, poverty is just a circumstance but not people’s fate and their organisation tends to talk to students so that they can understand that they can change their lives in the slums.
The move has been well supported by area MP, Ken Okoth. He too has been challenging youths to accept where they are from and try to make a change as to where they are headed.
‘‘I was born and raised in this slum but I worked hard to be where I am. I know how youths are challenged by life but keep on hassling,’’ said Okoth.
Last year, Shofco organised an empowerment program to enlighten teachers on sex education and how to handle sex issues raised by the pupils and students in their schools.
