In 2013, women only won 16 out of the 290 open seats in the National Assembly.

There was, however, no elected woman as Senator or governor.

However, the County Assemblies came close to bridging the two-thirds gender gap with 82 women being elected as ward representatives while 680 were nominated.

The programme now seeks to increase the number of elected women leaders who have for a very long time faced numerous challenges when contesting for top seats.

“The plans alongside others is also aimed at increasing the number of women vying for various positions from 1,800 in 2013 to least 4,500 in the next general election,” said Margaret Mbugua, who is the KWH Programmes Manager.

She asked the media to give women aspirants fair coverage as their male counterparts saying during a political news study, males were given 79 percent coverage in general news, 67 percent on editorials and 47 percent on letters to the editor compared to the little coverage on women.
