Cassava farming in Kisumu is expected to get a major boost after a local NGO launched a programme to train farmers on good agricultural practices that will boost the level of output.
Self Help Africa, a local NGO is determined to change the fortunes of cassava farmers in the area by making then know the good agricultural practices which can as well help to preserve the soil from losing fertility.
According to the organization's Programme Manager George Okeyo, the farmers from four groups will be trained on cassava production and value addition.
"It is our desire to improve the quality and and quantity of cassava that is produced in the area. Many times, much of the cassava that is produced goes on wastage as many farmer do not know how to add value to their produce and hence getting their earning go up," said Mr Okeyo.
He said the organization will later on roll-out the same programme to other counties within the region including Siaya, Homa Bay, Migori and Busia which are also known for cassava growing in the region.
Mr Okeyo further added that the programme is currently targeting 130 farmers to produce clean and and certified cassava cuttings.
