A community based organisation in Lari sub county has urged the government to supply girls in the area with sanitary towels.
Traditional Lari Network (TLN) Secretary Judy Njeri said most girls in the sub county have no access to sanitary pads.
Speaking during a mentorship programme for girls held at AIC Church in Nyambare on Wednesday, Ms Njeri observed that cases of girls dropping out of school for lacking sanitary towels were on the rise.
She noted that most girls had resulted to using banana leaves and clothes to control their menstrual periods.
“It is a pity that some of our girls cannot attend school because they lack sanitary towels and other special basic items, the government should take the matter seriously and supply girls with sanitary towels to ensure that their learning is not interrupted,” said Njeri.
The TLN secretary also observed that self confidence and esteem among girls in the area is down due to the embarrassment they experience while interacting with others during menstruation.
She said girls have a right to be supplied with the sanitary towels stating that it is the responsibility of the government to provide.
At the same time, the community based organisation wants the government to put in place more stringent laws that will deal with cases of defilement.
