Athi River-based orphanage is organising a 10kilometre marathon in Mavoko Sub County to raise funds to support orphans and vulnerable children (OVC) from the region.
Addressing the Press at the orphanage in Athi River town on Saturday, Bondeni Children and Rescue Centre director Florence Gitau said they are working on the nitty gritty of the marathon that is slated for August this year.
Gitau said the object of the marathon was to raise funds to support needy children whose numbers have risen over the last two years.
She added that the event was also meant to create awareness on the need to join hands in supporting needy children across the county and nation alongside sensitising the public against child abuse and neglect.
Gitau urged parents to extend a helping hand to needy children noting that it was the responsibility of entire community to ensure the well being of the needy children and orphans in the community.
She argued that OVCs were most vulnerable to child abuse given that they had less protection.
The director said the marathon targets to raise over Sh10 Million hence called on Kenyans, cooperate bodies, civil society, religious organisations, companies and leaders at both local, national and international levels to turn up for the event.
