The National Transport and Safety Authority was on Tuesday ordered from the roads, after a festive season that saw hundreds of Kenyans lose their lives in grisly road accidents.
Kenyans were angered by their work, or none of it, calling for the disbandment of the body that is supposed to ensure maximum safety.
The NTSA may now be limited to other duties but will rely on traffic police officers to implement directives on roads.
The president’s order to kick out the body out of the road was ordered off the road, but it does not mean the body has been disbanded.
Among some of the roles, the body will be performing include; registering and licensing of motor vehicles, conducting of motor vehicle inspection and certifications.
Others include regulating Public Service Vehicles, advising the national government on policy as regards to road transport sector.
The NTSA is also mandated to conduct research and other road safety measures, including compiling traffic reports related to traffic accidents.
The move by the president was lauded by many Kenyans, who think the NTSA has not been effective on the road, and instead the number of accidents has gone up.
