Deputy President William Samoei Ruto on Monday issued a Sh53 million cheque to compensate farmers from Kajiado county who lost their cattle to the Tanzanian government. He said the money was to help the 22 families who lost 1,325 restock their animals.
He added that the government sought to maintain the good relationship between Kenya and the neighboring country Tanzania by compensating the farmers.
“The government is mindful and has sympathy for the families which lost their animals. It’s also our resolve to maintain our existing good relations with our neighboring country, Tanzania. This is why we have decided to compensate the families,” said Mr. Ruto.
Rarieda Member of Parliament Hon. Otiende Amollo on learning this, condemned the deputy president for compensating cattle rather than families who lost their loved ones to police brutal killings during the post election demos. He concluded that they would come back to the matter later.
"Really Warped Country... Proudly Compensating for Cattle... and NIL for over 300 KILLED by Police! ..We Shall Revisit!!! DP Ruto issues Sh53mn cheques from Govt to compensate 22 families whose livestock was seized by Tanzanian authorities," he said
The Tanzanian government confiscated cattle from the Maasai community when they were freely left to graze into Tanzanian land. President Magufuli condemned the idea and warned against similar.
