Parents from Gesima Ward in Nyamira County have appealed to chiefs in the area to close all video show centres saying their children are spending too much time there instead of concentrating on their studies.

Speaking at Gesima Market, a section of parents led by Joseph Orogo faulted people running such businesses for allowing young children to watch movies at their outlets saying children were getting addicted.

“This business has made our children fail in academics since every time you find them thinking about those films they watch, we are urging the administration to take action and ban this business in this area,” said Orogo.

According to them, it was worse during the ongoing teachers' strike and the subsequent closure of all public schools by the government.

They say several children are sneaking from their homes to watch movies with some spending several hours away from home.

"We appeal to our chiefs to help us since these films have spoiled our children, most of them do not spend their time even to do personal studies instead they visit those shops to watch movies," added Joseph

Sarah Kerubo, a mother of two, says her two children have formed an habit of returning home at night, something she says has given her sleepless nights.
