Addressing a press conference at the station’s office in Kisumu on Friday, the director of the station, Fred Mariwa, said the shutdown was not warranted noting that the matter is now being handled in court.

“We have a legitimate license. I don’t understand why it was shut down even without consulting us,” he said.

Mariwa said the station has been in contact with the Communication Authority when they switched from a community radio station to commercial status.

He claimed the action taken by the police and officers from the authority was in bad faith since there was no communication regarding the intended switch off.

Mariwa said they have not received any communication from the authority before or after the shutdown.

He said what they learnt from the media is that the new station was interfering with the frequency of other radio stations in the area.

Mariwa noted that no radio station has lodged any complaint with them on the alleged interference.

Police on Wednesday raided the station and arrested two radio journalists who were on duty who have since been charged with broadcasting illegally.

They two were later released on bond.
