Sicily Kariuki the health cabinet secretary has already signed a deal to bring 100 Cuban doctors to kenya .She also stated that 50 Kenyan doctors will travel to Cuba for specialized training, mostly on family medicine.
Kenya has agreed to pay 100 Cuban doctors a monthly salary of up Sh882,180. The government has signed a deal that puts the medics in Job Group S as reported by daily Nation .
Kenyan doctors represented by the Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists Union (KMPDU), are opposed to the move. They claim tha the Cuban medics got a better deal from government as compared to the one they were given in the 2017 CBA.
The Kenya Medical Association want President Uhuru Kenyatta to review his decision to contract 100 Cuban specialists, and instead encourage local doctors to take the jobs
“Advertise locally and if nobody applies, go global to fill the gaps. But don’t take 100 doctors from Cuba and deny Kenyans a chance,” Kenya Medical Association Secretary General Lukoye Atwoli told media.
Professor Lukoye said that the first batch of the foreign doctors were coming to the country to treat malaria , something that can be done by our local doctors .
The local doctors want President Kenyatta to convene a meeting with experts and every stakeholder in the health sector to discuss his planning of importing doctors .
