Residents of Nyakach Sub County in Kisumu are living in disbelief after over 100 cows dropped dead starting Monday, this week.

According to a section of residents, the cows developed difficulties walking before dropping dead moments after leaving the grazing field.

They residents noted that the deaths began on Monday evening adding that 150 cows estimated tobe worth Sh4 million have died so far.

Joshua Otieno, one of the affected farmers in the area has lost 14 out of his 24 cows. 

"As I moved closer to the cowshed, one cow had already dropped to the ground. Before long another one dropped. We tried to save them but it was not possible. Within 30 minutes, 10 cows had died," Mr. Otieno told The Standard.

"We are shocked. We have used the same grazing field since time immemorial and we have never witnessed such an incident," he added. 

The cause of death remains unknown, although there were unconfirmed reports that the cattle may have fed on grass from a farm that had been sprayed with a chemical.

Former Kisumu County deputy governor who is now the Kisumu County Director for Special Programmes Ms Ruth Odinga said they had sent an excavator to help bury the dead animals.
