Thieves broke into a farmer’s home at Empakasi village in Mavoko sub-county and stole more than 100 goats and sheep on Monday night.
Mzee Joan Lelei who addressed the press at his home said the incident happened at 2.00 am.
He said thieves gained access into his goats and sheep ‘boma’ at his home through the fence after cutting barbed wire using pliers.
Lelei said the culprits stole the livestock and killed 22 sheep by slitting their throats leaving them dead spread along the way between his home and neighboring Kasuitu slum.
“The thieves broke into my boma at 2.00 am last night and stole all my sheep and goats including their young ones,” said Lelei.
Lelei said his neighbors helped him recover eight sheep alive in Kasuitu Slum on Tuesday morning.
He said the incident had impoverished him since the livestock were his only source of livelihood.
Lelei estimated the loss to over Sh 500,000 costing each sheep and goat at Sh 5,000.
Residents said it is inhuman to kill livestock by mercilessly slitting their throats as the culprits did to one of them.
Jeremiah Kaloi, the locals’ spokesman said stock theft is rampant in the area lately.
“As residents of Empakasi village, we are seriously hurt with this incident, there is high rate of stock theft in this area lately,” said Kaloi.
He said they were disappointed with the region’s security officers because thieves were walking freely, no arrests had ever been made since the incident started.
Kaloi said as a community, they were seriously disadvantaged since they were forced to deal with both problems of livestock theft and wild life – human conflicts.
He said police should intensify night patrols in the area to protect residents and their property and prevent more of such incidences.
Lelei called for well wishers interventions so that he gets assistance to enable him replace the stolen livestock and continue with his livelihoods normally.
