About 1000 students of the Jaramaogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology (JOOUST) have this morning been forced to vacate their school hostels following a fire that broke out earlier yesterday.
The fire was allegedly discovered by university staff that live around the school premises when they raised alarm. The alarm then prompted quick action from the schools administration which then gathered the students in trying to contain the spread.
Witnesses claim that the fire started on the 5th floor of the hostel building before spreading out just a few minutes after 11 am.
The Institutions public relations officer Mr Osir Oteng’ said that the situation was contained bt a water boozer owned by a local businessman that resided in the area.
“We managed to contain the situation just 30 minutes before the Kisumu fire brigade got to the scene,” said Mr Osir. He further added that the institution was very lucky as students were out for classes.
The institution is yet to confirm the extent at which the incident will cost, they are now awaiting damage assessment to be conducted.
