Kisumu County Commissioner John Elungata has announced that there are over 11,000 uncollected national Identity Cards in the county.
Elungata said an ID is a crucial document that should be acquired by anybody who has reached the mandatory age of 18.
He asked applicants to visit offices where they submitted their applications to collect the documents.
“I want call upon all the applicants to take time and visit government offices and check on the status of their IDs,” he said.
The commissioner asked parents whose children are studying locally and globally to pick the IDs from registration centres.
Speaking to the press in Kisumu on Monday in his office, Elungata said soon police will start a swoop to look for people who have reached 18 years but have no IDs.
“Just very soon our police officers will start asking for IDs. Remember that it is within the police mandate to ensure every Kenyan who has attained the age of 18 to have an ID,” he said.
He said most of the IDs have been given to the chiefs and their assistants and wondered why locals have declined to collect them.
Elungata spoke as voter registration apathy is being recorded in the ongoing voter registration in the county.
