The Kisumu County government has moved in to give foodstuffs and non food items to the victims of floods occasioned by the ongoing El Nino rains.

The County Director of Disaster and Preparedness Erick Odida said there are 2,500 people displaced by floods in the entire county.

Mr Odida said the most affected are in Nyando sub county, followed by Muhoroni and Nyakach sub counties.

“We have enough food and we want to assure all the residents who were affected by the floods that help will reach them,” he said.

He said the county had done needs assessment in the affected areas and responded with the immediate required items.

Speaking on Friday when he distributed the items to the affected persons in different evacuation camps, Mr Odida said the county will also organise medical clinics in the affected areas.

He said the county has not received any assistance from the national government.

Mr Odida said the county government was forced to borrow money from different sectors to be able to respond to the calamity.

He lauded the effort of non state actors who have teamed up with the county to address the situation.

“We are still waiting for the allocation from the national government. We have lined up a number of activities to be carried out with that money once it is disbursed to the account,” he said.
