Police officers on Tuesday night seized 3,200 litres of illicit brew at Mavoko Location in Athi River Sub-County.

The sub-county administration police commander, Stephen Matu said the brew known as Kangara was found stored in eleven 200-litre drums along the Mto Wa Mawe River.

"We managed to seize and destroy 3,200 litres of Kangara brew at a raid which we carried out along Mto Wa Mawe River at Mavoko location on Tuesday night," said Matu.

Matu said the officers were unable to arrest any suspects in the raids since the two raided illicit brew distilling dens were at isolated areas in the middle of the bush away from residential areas.

He said the brewers had shifted from their usual brewing points along the river and changed their operations upwards within the borders of Athi River and Kitengela towns, operating in the middle of the night due to regular crackdown.

"We keep hitting on the illicit brewers in the entire sub-county in well-coordinated crackdowns. Last week we seized and destroyed 1,000 litres of Kangara in the same location prompting the culprits shift towards the boundary due to persistent raids," said Matu.

Matu who spoke to this reporter at his Athi River office said it was not easy to locate the dens since they were hidden between a heap of logs.

He said they acted on a tip-off from members of the public from the region who had been attracted by smell.

Matu said the officers also destroyed and confiscated the distillers paraphernalia with the intent of completely eliminating the trade in the region.

"The fight against illicit brew is still on and we are going to make sure that illicit local brew is gotten rid of in entire Athi River Sub-County. It is high time the distillers find other legal businesses to engage in," said Matu.
