Over 400 residents of City Carton Slum, Athi River have been left stranded in the cold after fire caught the slum yesterday. The fire which is said to have broken out sometime after 1 pm consumed a big part of the slum starting from one of the food kiosks in the area before spreading out.

Addressing the press on this matter was Mavoko Sub county’s Assistant County Commissioner Phillip Lemalasya, he thanked the counties’ fire fighters and members of London Distillers Company limited for responding to the incident in less than 10 minutes.

Mavoko Sub – county Fire Brigade supervisor also added that not much could be done with the situation given the nature of the structures within the slum.

“We had two fire engines from mavoko sub county and London Distillers but due  to the slum structures it made it almost impossible for the engines to access the fire,” he said.

He added that a combination of wind and carton materiel primarily used to construct the structures caused the fire to sprad very fast.

Some of the victims of the fire attack include resident business man who lost a kiosk with almost 100 chicken and 300 pigeon.
