Up to 445 workers of Migitio Plantation Ltd in Rongai, Nakuru County have been fired over unclear circumstances.
The workers are now pleading with Central Organisation of Trade Unions general secretary Francis Atwoli, to come to their rescue after the company’s manager Lucy Njagi served them with dismissal letters on May 18, 2016, for allegedly questioning how 20 of their colleagues were sent parking a day earlier.
Speaking to this writer on the phone, the workers’ chairman Michael Otieno said; “We were just showing solidarity with our colleagues after they were dismissed for allegedly causing chaos and beating up two of our colleagues namely Willis Otieno and Nicholus Kawia during February protests”.
The workers had in February, 2016, taken to the streets to protest against delayed payment and allowances among other issues.
“This job is what our families depend on, how come the manager has sent us home without any notice?” he questioned.
“I have communicated to Atwoli and he has promised to help us,” he added.
However, when contacted, the company’s manager Lucy Njagi said if the workers feel aggrieved by any move made by the company, they should take to her office rather than picketing.
The company which is owned by Baringo Senator Gideon Moi, also deals with other farm products like flowers and onions.
