A total of 56 minors in Taita-Taveta County have been put on probation.

The minors were arrested last week after they were found drinking alcohol in one of the clubs in Taveta town.

The minors, who consist of students from primary and secondary schools within and outside the Taita Taveta County, had come together for a back-to-school party when they were arrested.

On Wednesday, Taveta Magistrate Geoffrey Kimang’a, who had earlier ordered the police to take the minors to Taveta Sub-County Hospital for age assessment, put the minors on a three-years-probation, with an order that the report to the Children’s Department after every three months.

However, magistrate Kimang’a warned that the court will never again give such like a rulings to similar offenders in the future.

“I order the parents and guardians of these minors to ensure that they report to the Children’s Department as ordered, failure to which they will face the law,” magistrate Kimang’a gave the warning.

The magistrate gave the rulings in presence of the children's parents, who had been ordered to be present.

The minors who were held at the Taveta Police Station since their arrest in last week, at Veteran Club and charged with underage drinking.

The management of the clubs will also get charged for selling alcohol to underage persons.

Taveta OCPD Joel Chesire said the arrested owner of the club will be charged for contravening the Liquor Act which prohibits admission of minors into premises selling alcohol.
