More than 50 students from Starshine Blue School in Kiambu cheated death on Thursday after the bus they were travelling in was involved in an accident along the Nairobi-Nakuru highway.
The students and their teachers were on a school trip to the Nakuru National park.
The accident occurred at the Raini trading centre, after the bus developed mechanical problems and veered off the road.
One student and three teachers were taken to the Naivasha Sub County Hospital after sustaining serious injuries during the morning accident.
Twenty other students who sustained minor injuries were treated and discharged at the same facility.
Confirming the incident, Naivasha OCPD Samuel Waweru said the injured teachers and student are in stable condition.
James Njoroge, a witness, said the bus which was being driven at high speed, lost control after hitting speed bumps.
“It is by good luck that there were no other vehicles on the road at that time as the bus swerved from one side to other before crashing on its side,” said Njorogo, as quoted by the Standard.
According to Francis Karimi, another witness, the bumps which were erected a couple of years ago, have caused several accidents among drivers new to the route.
“Just like the other accidents, the driver spotted the speed bumps when it was too late and this led to the accident where scores of students were injured,” he said.
The OCPD said the driver who had earlier denied the claims of speeding, recorded a statement at the Naivasha Police Station.
