Over 50 teenage orphans from Heritage of Faith and Hope Children Resources Centre in Sabaki,Machakos County have undergone a 3 day training on life skills.
This was disclosed by Faith Muturi, Founder of Simama Outreach Trust, who said the training was intended to equip the orphans with skills needed to handle their life challenges, increase self esteem and mold them to future leaders. "Young people are leaders, have capacity of making differences in the society, reach out to mentor and to be mentored," said Muturi. Speaking during their certification at the centre yesterday, Muturi said the project that was sponsored by Youth For Christ, engaged several professionals from different fields such as doctors, engineers, teachers, media practitioners, interior designers, event organizers and teachers, who mentored the teenagers on other areas in a bid of equipping them with factual information to enable them make wise and informed decisions while making career choices. Muturi said the training focused on most of the challenges which teenagers face in their daily lives, including sexuality with more focus on abstinence, leadership and goal setting, peer influence and drug substance abuse. "These are the problems teenagers face, in fact there are lots of sexual abuse that make perpetrators lose self esteem and identity. Social media is currently full of sexual information that in many cases corrupt minds of both young and old," said Muturi. She argued that most of the children homes were neglected as far as awareness and capacity building was concerned, since majority of well wishers and donors only concentrated on donations and resources mobilizations for the institutions forgetting need for guidance and psychosocial support. Muturi said all children needed to be all round empowered without discrimination of their situation, condition or whatever reason hence disclosed that Simama Outreach Trust, which had its roots in Nairobi County with focus in churches, schools, community centres and children homes would devolved to all the 47 countries across the nation.
