More than 6000 families in Uasin Gishu County are set to benefit from cash transfer programme.
The Star reports that the programme is part of the county government’s effort to remove streets families in major towns. An officer from the children’s department, Julius Yator said that the government is committed to fighting the increasing number of street children in the area.
He also revealed that poverty is among the major causes of the upsurge in the number of streets families in Eldoret and other towns.“The programme is meant to cushion families from effects of poverty and keep children from poor families from going to the streets to beg for survival," he said, as quoted by The Star.
Yator also stated that parents are partly to blame for the increasing number of urchins in various areas of the county.
Governor Jackson Mandago had issued a directive for the removal of streets urchins, an exercise that saw over 100 children taken back to their homes.
The children were returned to their homes after they were screened and their parents identified.
