A forestry official on Monday led residents of Kangundo in planting over 6,000 trees.
Thomas Mailu who heads the Forestry department in Kangundo said during the exercise that the move aims at restoring lost forest cover.
He led a group of residents in planting the trees at Ndunyu Sabuk hills, one of the areas facing deforestation.
"A good cover of trees protects the soil from erosion and its nutrients from being depleted due to direct sunlight," Mr Mailu said during the event witnessed by hundreds of people.
He said most parts of Machakos had lost trees and vegetation cover and called on residents to embrace tree planting to replenish the lost green cover.
Mr Mailu said Ukambani faces food insecurity because there were no trees to attract rainfall.
He added that farming over the years in the area had been hampered by the absence of the rain.
The event took place as the country embarks on a journey that aims at planting more trees.
Government recently announced plans to plant trees in major water catchment areas including the famous Mau Forest.
