More than 70 schools in Kilifi County have received money from the national government for upgrading infrastructure.
The initiative aims at obtaining a 100 per cent transition from primary school an Education ministry official said.County Education Director Moses Karati said government will monitor the spending of the cash to ensure it is appropriately utilised.Chakama, Dr Krapf, Mjanaheri and Shujaa Mekatilili secondary schools are among institutions awarded Sh3 million each while Malindi High School received Sh6 million.Karati warned the beneficiary schools’ head teachers against misusing the money. He said some schools would build science laboratories but majority will invest in constructing extra class rooms to accommodate the expected high number of students enrolling for high school studies. He said schools that will properly account for their expenditure stand a high chance of receiving more funding during the 2017/2018 Financial Year.Kilifi is among counties that register poor results in national examinations occasioned by constraints associated with poor school infrastructure. Some secondary schools in the county have ill-equipped science laboratories making it tough for students to excel in the science subjects of Biology, Physics, Chemistry and Agriculture. The distribution of schools in the devolved unit is also uneven such that some students and pupils walk for long distances to school.Although the education sector’s operations still fall under the national government, Governor Amason Kingi last year promised to set up a special fund that will be used for upgrading facilities at selected schools in the county.
