Floods have displaced more than 700 residents in Taveta, Taita Taveta County following heavy rains, Red Cross officials say.

County Red Cross coordinator Joram Oranga said water from the rivers end up in the villages causing huge floods that leave people with nowhere to go.

Major affected areas includes Kitobo, Rekeke, Lesuyai, Gregan, Tangini, Wanganga among others. 

Residents are forcefully seeking accommodation from well-wishers, friends and relatives from other an unaffected areas of the county. 

The floods swept away crops and livestock living residents accounting loses. Farmers are unable to carry on, with their farming activities after their farms were submerged in water. 

 Some farmers are saying they never visit their farms due to daily rains, making them worried if they will harvesting anything from their investments. A banana farmer Moses Kiriro, lamented he had not supplied his customers with the food product for about two weeks because his banana plantation was submerged in water. 

“It rains almost every day and I cannot access my farm,” said Kiriro.

The floods have also destroyed roads making it hard for traders to reach the market. Farmers cannot take their food products to the market due to flooded roads. Others heading to neighboring towns are forced to use alternative routes, which are longer. 

“We are using the Tanzania route or Voi route then connect with Nairobi-Mombasa highway,” Nelson Mutua.
