More than 800 members of the Samawathal clan have endorsed Parliament Majority leader Aden Duale’s re-election.
The endorsement is a plus to the Garissa Township MP seeking a second term.
Duale on Sunday hosted the opinion leaders at his Garissa residence, two days after being cleared by the IEBC to defend his seat in the August poll.
Among issues discussed during the meeting was the outspoken MP’s development record and the 2017 political game plan that seeks to harness votes for Jubilee aspirants in Garissa County.
The leaders comprised of youth representatives, women grass root mobilizers and religious leaders who in unison agreed to support his re-election bid as it is “anchored on unity, development and cohesive coexistence."
Both Duale and his closest political rival, former Parliament Deputy Speaker Farah Maalim were cleared by the IEBC on Friday, setting stage for high voltage campaigns as the two outfox each other ahead of the forthcoming general election.
Duale took time during the meeting to outline his leadership’s achievements for the last five years.
He said through his representation, roads had been constructed, electricity extended to more homes as more students had access to bursary.
The leaders’ chairperson Ahmed Yusufo said members of the Samawathal clan support the election of Jubilee candidates and President Uhuru Kenyatta in the county.
“Traditionally they (Samawathal clan members) have been my key supporters and I promised them that they have a friend in my leadership and will never tire in addressing the challenges they are facing as a community now and in the future,” Duale said after the meeting.
