A total of 960 candidates vying for various elective positions were cleared to contest in the 2017 general election on Day 1 of submission of nomination papers, by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), Sunday.
IEBC Returning Officers were stationed in IEBC headquarters nationwide, to receive documents of all the aspirants.
As of 4pm, 961 candidates had been cleared, including three presidential candidates, Ekuru Aukot, Raila Odinga and Muhammad Abduba Dida. Joseph Nyaga was sent away on the first day, and asked to come back, Monday, after he failed to submit all the required documentation.
The Commission has instructed Returning Officers not to accept the candidates who have not met all conditions
The Commission had gazetted 337 Returning Officers to undertake clearance of 16,364 candidates, in the gazetted days, and instructed them not to clear those who had not met the stipulated requirements.
