Residents of Kibera have decried that due to the overloading of matatus by matatu operators in the area.
These matatus have caused quite a number of accidents that have left many people dead.
Speaking along the Kibera - Yaya road, the residents raised concern that the safety of passengers being ferried in matatus with excess luggage is a risk to lives.
"I do not agree with matatu operators operating in Kibera. How come you load a matatu excessively without considering the safety of passengers. Matatu conductors should appreciate the small earnings they get rather than overloading their vehicles, "said Joy Munene.
She noted that operators on Kibera roads have failed to adhere to NTSA rules and they should face the law.
Timothy Ochwang' said that passengers have failed to report to the police cases of overloading for such operators to be arrested.
"Passengers should be careful on the roads. How does one accept to sit in a vehicle that is already full? People should learn road safety to curb road accidents that arise from excessive loading", he stated.
"Matatu conductors are taking advantage of the poor passengers to overload them together with luggage without taking safety measures. Lives are important than the small money", said Joseph Ondoro.
The tendency of matatu conductors loading vehicles excessively has been on the rise despite the campaigns from NTSA. Matatus operating along Yaya - Kibera - Kawangware late evening and early morning overloads vehicles and conductors hang from outside without fearing arrest from police or NTSA.
