Former Raila aide, Eliud Owalo, who is also eyeing the Kibera Constituency seat has criticised police brutality on residents during the Monday protests.
Speaking in Kibera on Tuesday, Owalo said he is looking into getting answers as to why police are harassing peaceful demonstrators.
“I have received numerous distress calls from constituents of Kibera claiming that state security agents and anti-riot police invaded their homes, schools, and places of business brutalising everyone on sight on Monday,” stated Owalo.
He also added that with the illegal invasion of Kibera by the police, there have been reports of several injuries and needless destruction of property. Learning was also interrupted in most schools in the area as police teargas overcame children, some as young as five.
“I wish to condemn in the strongest possible terms this unprovoked action by the Kenya Police on innocent citizens. The freedom of association, movement, assembly and picketing is enshrined in the constitution. Kenya is not in a state of emergency to warrant the placement of citizens under house arrest,” he said.
Owalo added that they are reviewing and documenting the cases of police brutality on Kibera residents with a view to taking legal action against the individual police officers, their bosses and the CS for Interior, Joseph Nkaissery.
