Police spokesperson Charles Owino has denied claims that a hit squad exists in the police force.

Owino while being interviewed on Citizen TV on Tuesday night dismissed the claims as unfounded and meant to tarnish the police force. He said that a hit squad does not exist in the service terming the claims as propaganda.

The police spokesperson also denied claims that police are engaging in extrajudicial killings.

“Claims that there exists a hit squad in the police force are not true and we urge anyone with information that police are involved in killing innocent people to present the information to us for immediate action,” he said.

Owino however said that rogue police officers who contravene the law will not be tolerated. The spokesperson said that already mechanisms are in place to get rid of rogue officers from the service.

“With the ongoing reforms in the force, rogue officers will no longer be tolerated,” he said.

Owino who was responding to claims that slain human rights lawyer, his client and driver were allegedly eliminated by the police said that investigations are ongoing.

“We want to assure the public that justice will be rendered for the slain lawyer Willie Kimani, his client and the driver,” he said.

Owino urged the public not to speculate on the murder and allow for investigations. The killing of the lawyer and two other people has attracted a global condemnation from leaders and human rights activists.

Already four suspects linked to the killings are in police custody and will be arraigned in court once investigations are complete.

On Tuesday CID Director Ndegwa Muhoro said that they were involving the FBI in probing the murder. There have been claims that police could be behind the elimination of innocent Kenyans who die mysteriously.

On Sunday Cord leaders Raila Odinga, Kalonzo Musyoka and Moses Wetangula called for investigations into the extrajudicial killings. The leaders also called for a public inquiry into thee death of lawyer Kimani and two other people.
