The longest serving student leader at the University of Nairobi, Paul Ongili, popularly known as Babu Owino has been making headlines almost daily.
The recent scandal he is in was him concerns the university and the chaos which erupted during the planned protest.
Owino was re-elected as a student leader something other students believe was a lie and that he rigged. Some students, led by his opponent accused Owino of having bribed voters and went to get more goons from Mathare and Kibera slums to cause war at school.
Reports indicate that Owino has quite a lot of money which he uses to manipulate voters. Due to this, NACADA chairman John Mututho has called on the government to investigate him.
After a photo of Owino holding a briefcase of dollars and a gun, Mututho wondered how the student leader could be having a gun and where he got the dollars from. He has now appealed to the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC), the police and the Central Bank to probe the source of this wealth.
‘‘The government has not investigated the source of this wealth. We have seen the student issue money to the other students during elections. Where does he get all this money to campaign?’’ said Mututho.
