Its mission is to extend learning and education worldwide.

Oxford Global Languages Initiative hopes to transform people experiences worldwide by availing content in different languages in a digital platform, in apps, on websites, and in many different tools and services.

Oxford Dictionaries director, Judy Pearsall, in a video message, as they launched the online Swahili dictionary said one reason why the Swahili version is put together is to help connect cultures across Africa.

Swahili is the fourth African language to be added to the Oxford programme, after Northern Sotho, Zulu and Setswana.

English and other global languages such as Spanish and Chinese dominate the digital communication across the globe.

The new initiative by Oxford is a step toward developing the language for use across Africa for the Swahili speakers.
