The Council of Governors has now disowned the Ksh40 billion it presented to the Salaries and Remuneration Commission as proposed pay hike for nurses. [Photo/courtesy]The governors claim they have no money to pay the negotiated nurses CBA.The Josphat Nanok led Council says the Ksh40 billion CBA was anticipated on an enhanced revenue allocation bill of Ksh324 billion which was slashed by parliament to Ksh291 billion. In a conciliatory meeting at the Ministry of Labour, the nurses through their union said they will take nothing less than the agreed amount which it said was Ksh7.25 billion per year and not the Ksh40 billion that the COG is claiming.Labour Cabinet Secretary Phillis Kandie however remains hopeful that a solution will be found very soon.Nanok further alleges that the striking nurses left the negotiating table prematurely with the CBA at its advanced stage without even registering the dispute with county governments.Speaking on Wednesday, KNUN acting Secretary General Morris Opetu says nurses have not registered any dispute with both levels of government maintaining that their position has been clear and that what they want is implementation of the negotiated CBA.On her part, Labor CS Phillis Kandie noted that the CBA signing has taken far too long and as should have been signed 60 days after conclusion of the negotiations.Representatives from COG, KNUN and the Ministry of Labour are scheduled for a meeting Thursday. The strike entered its third day Wednesday with several deaths being reported in Mombasa and Maralal.More deaths are feared as patients are unable to get the required medical attention due to the strike.
