Renowned political scientist and historian Nyachieo Bogonko has blasted the solidarity shown by eight legislators who were recently held over hate speech by accusing them of being out of touch with reality.
The eight had a common lunch on Tuesday and some have blamed the government for deplorable conditions in Kenyan police cells and prison facilities.
Bogonko in a Tuesday’s interview said most politicians promote their vested interests other than working for ordinary people in their respective elective seats.
“I am really disappointed that some politicians can be arrested and complain of deplorable cell conditions yet they are in parliament and are mandated to pass budgets or even make legislations that can improve these facilities,” he said.
“Most of these people get elected and deviates from actual representation. Their comments show how politicians are completely out of touch with reality. This is a wakeup call for them to work for ordinary people other than their selfish interests,” he said.
He challenged MPs to pass legislations and budget that could see improvement of police cells, prisons, and housing of police officers.
“The truth is that our politicians prioritize non-issues. I hope they will learn from the experience and ensure there is enough budget to renovate our police cells, prisons and even the housing of our police officers,” he said.
