Political hopefuls in Garissa County have been thrown into a panicky mood after the opposition Cord coalition alleged that the ruling Jubilee was planning to rig the next elections.
The allegations attracted a harsh reaction from the top Jubilee management, with DP Ruto trashing the reports as being baseless.
Reports from the opposition had indicated that the Deputy President and the ICT Cabinet Secretary Joe Mucheru have been holding secret meetings with the senior officials from the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) in a bid to rig next year's August polls.
A joint press statement by the a section of opposition claimed that pressure was being exerted on the IEBC's nomination panel to manipulate the choices of the new commissioners. Additionally, the cord team also called for fresh vetting of all IEBC staff.
In Garissa County, political hopefuls allied to the opposition said they will expose and oppose any suspicious move from government officials especially on matters regarding elections and nominations.
It should be remembered that this Northern county has been named as one of the regions expected to experience fierce battle between cord opposition and the ruling Jubilee party.
For instance, Jubilee's Aden Duale and Ali Korane will battle the opposition's Farah Maalim and Nathif Jama in the parliamentary and gubernatorial posts respectively.
