Lecture rooms at the Kenya Methodist University (KeMU) Nakuru campus were deserted on Wednesday after lecturers and students kept away.
This was after news of its closure together with five others across the country.
According to students who spoke to the media, low enrollment was cited as the reason for this closure.
They said the university management had advised them to move to the university's other open campuses.
In a notice to the fraternity, the institution also dismissed more than 150 of its employees at the various campuses.
Only one receptionist had reported to work at the locked administration block of the Nakuru campus.
She told media that Dr Susan Chelang’at Nzioki, the campus director, was away on official duty.
“It is true the institution has been closed down,” she said.
“I was instructed to be available until the end of August to direct visitors to the main campus [in Meru]. I’ve also been advising students,” she added.
“We are required to move to the other campuses that are open, beginning of September,” said Denis Wanjau, a student.
Among other campuses said to have been closed include Kisii, and Meru campuses.
