Students at Kisii University are in a panic after the office of Registrar Academic Affairs released a memo ordering them to pay their tuition fees by October 15.
The memo written by Registrar Academic Affairs, Dr Joash Kerongo, was dated on October 10 and noted that all students were required to be duly registered so as to be able to access any services in the university.
“It has been brought to our attention that some students are attending lectures yet they are neither registered nor have paid the required fees for the first semester 2016/2017,” read the memo.
"Three resolutions were thereafter reached at by the university management. First, all students who had not registered were given October 11 and 12 to register for the semester. Secondly, students will be required to show proof that they have paid all fees for the semester including balances from previous semesters so as to allowed to sign the nominal roll. Lastly, all students who signed a promissory note must clear their semester fees and balances by October 15," the memo further reads.
“From October 17, any student who shall not have paid full fees will automatically be deferred by the ERP system until such a time that they will have raised the fees.”
This has attracted sharp reactions from students, who said the memo was untimely.
"The university management is creating unnecessary commotion and fear among students, they should extend the days or else we demand for justice," said Reagan Otieno, a fourth year student.
