Amani National Congress leader Musalia Mudavadi had invited Cord leaders, led by Raila Odinga, to form a Super Alliance to oust Jubilee government come 2017 general election.

The move could be similar to that of 2002 when opposition parties came together under NARC and won the general election by a landslide against KANU.

NARC presidential candidate, Mwai Kibaki, got 62% of the votes, against KANU’s Uhuru Kenyatta (now President) who attained 31% of the votes.

Kibaki’s landslide victory in 2002 was attributed to opposition chief Raila saying “Kibaki Tosha”.

Reports indicate that there is anxiety within the Jubilee Party, as all opposition parties seem to be interested in uniting ahead of 2017 polls – considering that Uhuru and his deputy William Ruto attained the 50+ 1 per cent in 2013 polls by only 4,100 votes.

Mudavadi last week hinted at teaming up with Cord co-principals Raila (ODM), Kalonzo Musyoka (Wiper) and Moses Wetang'ula (Ford Kenya).

Kanu, led by chairman Gideon Moi, Chama Cha Mashinani leader Isaac Rutto and Narc Kenya boss Martha Karua are also said to be ready to join the Super Alliance.

The opposition leaders have in past political rallies said their main aim is to remove Jubilee from power, citing corruption, economic crisis, unemployment and tribalism in government appointments by Uhuru’s administration.

Two Jubilee senators have reportedly moved to the Registrar of Political Parties, Lucy Ndungu, to block the opposition from registering the Alliance.

However, Ndungu, according to the Star, said she will give preference to the first application received.

“I have seen the applications but I don't know whether they are from the opposition. Two applications are by lawyers and one by a citizen,” The Registrar of Political Parties told the Star.

“Jubilee cannot survive such an alliance. They can only win by rigging,” said ODM secretary of political Affairs Opiyo Wandayi.

Cord chief executive Norman Magaya says the deal to form opposition’s Super Alliance could be sealed by December.
