An earthquake of 5.7 magnitude on Saturday hit the greater parts of East Africa, killing 13 and injuring some 203 in the neighbouring Tanzania.

The tremour which was felt as far as Western Kenya caused panic among residents of former Western and Nyanza provinces as it swept the region across Uganda and Tanzania.

Photos were later posted on social media showing frightened residents but it was those of deaths in Tanzania that showed the quake's real extent.

Tanzania suffered losses of lives and property as confirmed by Tanzania's Bukoba district commissioner Deodatus Kinawila.

"This incident has caused a lot of damage," he said.

"Some people have been discharged from hospital," he added. "We don't expect many more injuries."

Geological reports indicate that the quake hit at a depth of 10km in the 15:27hrs local time incident.
