Let them give us a break for we are tired of demonstration news and burning of schools by high school kids.

Every now and then, you find it on the papers that a certain secondary school has been closed down because of some irrational reasons. With this week having four schools striking with some burning down their schools, one fails to understand the sort of kids we are raising.

Shurie Secondary, Malindi High School, Ruthimitu Secondary School and Muhoho Secondary are the culprits of this week.

Sad enough, the reasons as to why these kids are demonstrating are some of them claiming they are not given quality food and they use a generator whenever there is no power.

Others have been demonstrating just because they were not permitted to watch football. It is so sad that these kids fail to understand that the main reason they are in school is to learn so as to better their own lives and not their teachers or parents’.

Worst of all, some direct their anger and frustrations from the school administration and Matiang’i’s new rules to burning their dormitories where their very own properties are. They easily forget that it is their parents who will carry the burden of buying them new beddings, uniforms and boxes after they burn their dormitory. Their parents too may have to still dig into their pockets and contribute some money to rebuild the burnt down facilities.

These children should be grateful that they have a generator when there is no power, some of us only had kerosene lamps and when the kerosene got finished you had to use a candle or torch to study. Despite all those challenges, we persevered and studied without these demonstrations we are hearing of these days.

Students should concentrate on learning and feeding well and watching football will follow afterwards.
