Fresh details about a suspected thief who was lynched by a mob in Mombasa have emerged.
According to reports, Athman Omar, as he was later identified, was released from Shimo la Tewa GK Prison after receiving a presidential pardon.
Omar is said to be one of the criminals released before the end of their jail term after President Uhuru Kenyatta granted 7,000 petty offenders amnesty during this year’s Mashujaa Day Celebrations.
Omar was lynched after he allegedly attacked a prominent businessperson in the region, and slashed him using a machete.
Likoni police boss Willy Simba confirmed that the late Omar had a criminal record, and he was yet to complete his jail term at the Shimo La Tewa Prison before he was pardoned.
Simba further added that Omar’s family had requested to pick the body for burial as they considered postmortem a waste of money on their part.
“I asked them to let a postmortem be conducted, but they told police there was no need as it was a waste of resources for such a criminal,” said Simba.
