Parents from Mavoko Sub-county, Machakos County, have been advised to coach their children during the December holidays to improve their academic performance.

Speaking to journalists in Athi River town on Friday, Paul Wasambo, a teacher and experienced educationist said past statistics had indicated most of the children’s performances went down in first term of each year.

Wasambo attributed this to laxity and little or totally lack of parents, guardians and children caretakers proper guidance and coaching of children during the holidays.

He said the December holidays were the most affected, given that they were longer and with lots of fun, celebrations and activities.

The educationist said that parents had responsibilities of ensuring their children's academic performances improved throughout the year.

He cautioned irresponsible parents against neglecting their children during the Christmas season, arguing that such were prone to get negatively influenced by their pears.

“We live in a very corrupt society with lots of crime and ill acts going on hence need to carefully monitor our children wherever they are and people they interact with for their safety," said Wasambo.

Wasambo proposed that parents from the region engage their children in holiday tuitions to constructively engage them and take their attentions away from unnecessary pressure and illicit acts.
