Child specialist Emily Kimani cited that majority of the parents leave their children to play stations and video games which were affecting the grammar.

Kimani added that the parents should create a conducive reading environment, citing that they should set up libraries in their houses.

“Majority of our children cannot read or spell properly and often their parents are too busy to help them understand or enjoy a book. Since many do not wish to go to the Main government library I would encourage parents to buy them enough story books,” she added

Ms. Kimani was addressing parents at Pipeline area on Wednesday evening where she appealed to them to exchange reading materials.

“The only way we can be sure that our children do not get eroded by the society is by encouraging them to read and analyse for themselves what is right. We need to change the current mode being adopted by children and show them reading is fun,” she added Kimani.

She also called for parents who had books they were not using to donate them to various children homes, citing that many had developed keen interest in reading.
