Parents in Nyanza region are calling for dialogue between Teachers Service Commission and the teachers' union to avert the looming strike due to start on Monday. The regional parents association chairman, Jackson Ogweno, said the impending strike must be averted to allow children to continue with their first term lessons. Ogweno said parents are tired with the constant strike calls by teachers that only distract attention of teachers and children in achieving quality education. “We are tired of strike calls every time of the school calendar term, the government must avert this strike to protect our children from missing their lessons," he said. Speaking in Kisumu, the chairman urged the commission and the Kenya National Union of Teachers to find a lasting solution to the teachers’ salary stalemate. He said parents support better remuneration for teachers but striking should not be the only option for teachers to press for better pay. Ogweno said it is very unfortunate that teachers’ pay increase in the country has been done after striking by the teachers. “We don’t support the looming strike but we support teachers in their quest to have better pay but it should not be done by calling for a strike,” he said. He said teachers play a pivotal role in molding children in the education sector and their welfare should be critically looked into to avoid unnecessary strikes that only impede education standards in the country. KNUT secretary general Wilson Sossion said the notice for a nationwide is still on despite an invitation from the government for salary talks this weekend.
