Residents of Nyainogu village have been cautioned against allowing their children play near a steep area of land as it has resulted in serious injuries a number of children.
Speaking yesterday during a baraza to sensitize parents against the dangers, area Chief Vincent Obara said the area is perilous for the children hence it was out of bounds.
“No parent will be allowed to send their children to fetch water from this area. It is very dangerous because of its steepness and this will cause more casualties”, he said.
Over five children have been admitted in Nyamira hospital after allegedly trying to play near the valley of death despite prior warning from the administrator.
“I know nobody will dispute the fact that I have always cautioned children against playing near the site. It is very sad that most of them have violated my directive”, he added.
Mr. Obara warned parents against allowing their children to continue playing near the site and promised to take unspecified actions against those who may ignore his directive.
“It is not only the government’s responsibility to ensure safety for its people but also the obligation of all parents. We will take stern actions against some of you who have kept on ignoring our warnings”, he said.
The site has been used as clean water fetching source and according to some residents, and despite Obara’s warning it seems the habit might persist due to the scarcity of other water sources in the area.
