Speaking on Thursday at Nyabara Ibere area in Nyamira, politician Catherine Nyamato said it was the responsibility of parents to ensure their children are safe whenever they are.

She raised an alarm over rampant cases of suspected child abduction in the region and urged police officers to be very vigilant.

“Taking care of the child is the sole mandate of the parents. As one, you must ensure that the young ones are safe from possible preditors. Time has come for us to desist from blaming the government every time,” she said.

“Obviousl,y we don’t have to vindicate the government either; the police officers must also ensure they have done their part. It is important that they look for the best way to curb such crimes.”

She asked the government to ensure suspected kidnappers are apprehended and arraigned in court to face prosecution for the crimes.

“The government has an obligation to ensure more than five children who reportedly vanished under anonymous circumstances are rescued and perpetrators brought to book,” she added.

Two pupils of Nyainogu primary reportedly went missing last week after their departure from the school, an incident that has raised questions among parents in the area over the security of their children.

Area chief Lameck Moenga promised the government’s commitment to rescue the children.
