31-year-old Jacinta Muthoni, the mother of a 10-month-old baby Jane Wairimu, who had 14 sewing needles lodged inside her back, and his husband will spend Christmas in jail, Daily Nation has reported.
The parents were arrested and charged with subjecting the infant to torture by inserting needs into her backside.
Principle Magistrate Grace Oodho who directed the case had to hold it for some time to excuse Magistrate Bartoo, who was responsible for handling the case.
A mental state test was done to Jacinta, the child’s mother to see if she is mentally stable. Results revealed she is mentally fit to stand trial.
Magistrate Batroo offered Esther Maina, the probation officer few days to confirm her inquiries before writing a report about the parents.
Ms. Batroo agenda to give the required bond terms the courts would have offered them on Friday did not happen as the probation officer was absent.
The baby had been admitted for diarrhea and vomiting at Thika Level Five Hospital when the discovery of the needles was made. An x-ray revealed 14 needles lodged inside the baby’s buttocks. Surgery was done and 13 needles were removed. A needle still remained at the child’s back as the doctors say it will harm the baby if removed.
