Parents in Kisumu County have opposed the ongoing proposal to introduce condoms in schools.
According to the Maseno School Parents Teachers Association Chairman James Obondi, the proposal was going to adversely affect the learning of the children.
"When we start distributing condoms to schools, it means that we are encouraging them to have sexual intercourses. This is going to affect their learning in a number of ways," Obondi said.
Speaking to the press while at his office yesterday, Obondi urged the parents, media and the government to ensure that they promote abstinence campaign at all times.
“We should be on the forefront to ensure that our young children abstain from sex till they reach the right age to do it,” Obondi said.
According to Violet Achieng, a parent, those children who do not practice sex may see it as the time to also start doing it.
"What we shall be doing is to tell those who do not practice it to start doing it also. Furthermore we all know that condoms are not 100 percent safe,” Achieng said.
Michael Ochieng another parent said that all the parents and leaders have a duty to ensure that they guide the children to stay away from any sexual activities.
